Masked Gang Attempts to Abduct Crypto Executive's Daughter and Grandson in Broad Daylight

A white van, three masked attackers, and a young child targeted on a busy Paris street at rush hour. The botched abduction of a Paymium co-founder's family member was filmed by onlookers - and shows how far criminals will go to seize cryptocurrency by force.

At approximately 08:20 on a Tuesday morning in Paris's 11th arrondissement, three masked men leapt from a white van and attempted to kidnap a woman and her young child on Rue Pache. The woman is the daughter of the co-founder of Paymium, a French Bitcoin exchange platform. The attack was filmed by a bystander and has since circulated widely.

A Rush-Hour Attack in Front of Children

The street was relatively busy at the time. A group of children were walking to a nearby primary school when the three attackers struck. The woman's husband, who was present with his family, attempted to shield them and was beaten repeatedly over the head. The couple called for help as the masked men tried to forcibly separate them.

At one point, the woman managed to grab a firearm from one of the attackers and throw it into the street. The weapon was later identified as a replica air gun. Passers-by initially hesitated to intervene, but as more locals reacted, the attackers abandoned the attempt and retreated to the van. One bystander threw a fire extinguisher at the vehicle as it sped away.

Family Treated for Minor Injuries

The family were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. A Paris police brigade specialising in armed robbery is investigating the incident. Four gang members have been identified: the three who exited the van and a fourth who remained at the wheel.

Part of a Growing Pattern

The attack in Rue Pache came little more than a week after French police rescued the father of a cryptocurrency millionaire who had been kidnapped while walking his dog in another part of the capital. He was held for ransom for three days, during which his kidnappers cut off one of his fingers. Several suspects were subsequently arrested.

In January of the prior year, David Balland - co-founder of Ledger, a leading cryptocurrency hardware wallet firm - was abducted alongside his wife from their home in central France. He was found at a house in Palaiseau, south of Paris, with a finger missing.

The Keynap Perspective

This incident illustrates a tactic that is becoming increasingly common: targeting family members rather than the asset holder directly. The attackers had no interest in the woman as an individual - she was leverage. The goal was to reach the private keys held by her father through psychological and physical pressure on his loved ones.

The fact that the attack failed is significant, but the lessons are not about luck. The couple's resistance, the presence of witnesses, and the attacker's use of a non-lethal replica weapon all contributed to the outcome. In a different context - at night, in a quieter street, with a real firearm - the result could have been very different.

  • ·Family members are attack vectors - brief them on security protocols and keep their public profiles minimal
  • ·Your daily schedule is intelligence: vary routes, departure times, and drop-off locations for children
  • ·Avoid linking your identity, address, or family to any public association with cryptocurrency
  • ·Ensure family members know not to resist if outnumbered and armed - compliance preserves life
  • ·Maintain situational awareness at transition points: leaving home, school runs, and parking are high-risk moments
  • ·Consider a professional threat assessment that includes your family's exposure, not just your own
